As rumoured before, the By-election presidential debates will be held on Friday March 7th in the UniCentre. They are scheduled to last from 11:30AM to about 1PM. More details to come.

It would also be nice to see the three BOA candidates be allowed to at least give a brief speech and take questions if there's time.

I would be very disappointed to see the BOA get shuffled aside again.

So talking of Debates are we actually going to be able to see candidates ask other candidates questions, like a real debate?

It would spice things up a little.

you know what would be even better?
If the debates are actually advertised to the general public so we have some sort of a turnout other then volunteers!
I also agree with Nick. Have a real debate and none of this Rotonde and Fulcrum questions.

Also have it at a time where people can attend. Whats with this 11am-1pm crap.
Hold it during the evening where there is less Classes happening, then you will have a better debate turnout

Ryan: Good idea. I will send an email to the BOA candidates and invite them to attend. We will find an adequate platform to allow them to bring forward their message.

Nick: Also a good idea. We can incorporate that into the debate formula, but we will have to see. Your idea will certainly be considered.

Ramy: GREATER idea. The Fulcrum will put a house-ad in their newspaper and I am lobbying the SFUO to send an email through their list-serv. That being said, the SFUO being the SFUO, I will not hold my breath.

As for the hours, 11:30AM to 1PM is the lunch hour, hence, allows more students to come between courses. I'm not quite sure if a Friday Night Debate would attract more people... Any thoughts?

This Friday??
This is so disorganized... are those dates written anywhere? I was just on the elections website earlier and couldn't find that info anywhere!

Stick with the lunch hour. I don't see people coming at night (there are also classes at night) - there won't be a time that works for everyone. That being said, Zoom could put it online (or there's this thing called YouTube if Zoom can't make it).

To maximize what we can offer students - have the candidates face off on CHUO during Ivory Antenna / Antenne d'Ivoire this (or next) week. Let's use everything we've got.

Oh, and agreed about the SFUO listserv. I don't think there has been one to say that we are currently in elections? If they don't send one out for the debates, I absolutely hope they will send a "Don't forget to vote" reminder email on the day of. Students forget these things, reminders when it's actually time to cast the ballot would be useful.
Especially with this byelection, the posters being identical, I didn't realize they were new and included the march dates.

My recommendation would be during the evening when there are less classes. 11:30-1 period has a lot of classes going (perfect time of the day...not to early or to late for classes) Last year, the PIDSSA (I know, I'm sorry I'm using PIDSSA as an example, I swear it will never happen again) brought out a full room (60-80 people. If a federated body can do it, I am 100% the SFUO can (and better as well)

my suggestion: 7pm on a weekday (thursday?)

To each his/her own!

I just think that's very little time and the groundwork (I assume?) has already been started for the times first mentioned.

I'll be there in any regard!

I am so satisfied with the way the SFUO is doing nothing at all to increase voter turnout. :)

Ryan

It is a horrible idea to promote an event in 4 days, especially a debate. It wont affect if the time changes anyways. No one knows its even happening. I am a dedicated/ active student on campus, and I had no clue up until 10 min ago the time and location of the debates

back to my point

evening works better for a lot of people

I disagree with the notion that an evening debate is better. Campus is much emptier in the evenings, and the random students that are otherwise uninvolved likely won't make a special trip to campus, but could stop to listen if they're in between classes.

I also find it funny that last year candidates came to me and told me they hated the previous format that included their asking each other questions, so, the Fulcrum and La Rotonde teamed up to offer an alternative. And now it's a shame that they can't. People are tough to please. Mad props to Nick and Wassim for working with the Fed to organize these.

BOA debates would be great, but I think next year during the general elections there should probably be a day of just BOA debates. There's just so many freaking candidates.

Advertisements are coming, but the information just wasn't confirmed in time to do it sooner. Also, as Wassim pointed out in previous posts, the elections' website isn't totally up to snuff at the moment, so maybe the info will go up six days from now?
