That means the magic number is 555. If you were able to get 555 votes, you will become the next President of the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa. Congratulations.
Well I think that Wassim's post meant that it would take 555 votes to win a clear break, meaning that if the winner were to have 555 votes, they would not have to worry about further counts as that person would already have the majority. As there are so few voters though, who knows how the numbers will end up looking like by tonight.
I don't agree with that statement one ounce. We cannot assume that they didn't care, and we can't assume that they won't notice.
I think that it is our responsibility to make sure that they DO notice the elections. Which could perhaps be the problem itself.
I am glad that there is clear discourse about the voter turnout. I am a bit taken aback that such discourse was not as prominent when only 10-11% of students do show up. I am sort of disappointed and confused that we are only outraged when 3.7% vote. And although it is an affront to elections, so is only get 10% out. And if it weren't for this blog, would this even be spoken about outside of our groups of friends? Would we even bother bringing it to public attention?
If this discourse becomes action, I believe that we WILL achieve a quarter of the students coming out. When making class presentations about PIDSSA, I always mentioned the estimated current turnout I got at the end of yesterday, and they were shocked. Some of the students left the classroom to go vote... The honest answer was: "We didn't even really know what it was about."
Serge is wrong to ask whether you accept it, because you cannot change the turnout of the election and nothing would harm the SFUO more than trying a third time, or having a shotgun by-election again in September as it will not allow for enough time for students to forget about this debacle. But, the winner is going to have to address this, and this has to be the MOST important issue to address.
The fact that we are even asking if this is going to be legitimate is reason enough to put this at the forefront of our collective consciousness in the student political realm.
I am both really disappointed and really angry. Pathetic truly is the only word for this... But the first realization that we need to achieve is that this is awful BUT addressable. So, lets put this disgrace behind us and work towards next year, and diversify the Elections Office. It needs to be arms length with the SFUO's resources at its disposal as it sees fit. It needs a larger team, and a VERY clear goal outline for the elections campaign!

Légitime, l'élection :)
Legit election :)
(cough)
not necessarily.... the magic number would be 370. Fat frigging chance the SFUO election winner will get a simple majority of votes.

I actually lied. I'm not that good at math...
Thanks Sam, great explanation. *cough*
How do you react if you get elected by less than 2% of the student population?
Can you honestly accept it..?
Yes you can. Whether you are elected by 2% of voters or %20 of voters, those that care voted. those that didn't won't really notice.

We can do it...
