By-election campaign: Advice to candidates

Advice to candidates: You have 250$ to spend. You can only print a limited amount of posters. Buy a domain name. These cost 6$ on GoDaddy.com. Then? Re-direct them to your blog. This whole operation will cost you 6$. People get lost. No one will go on mynameplustheyeariamrunning.wordpress.com. Keep it simple.

That's one $155 for JWR2, now! HA!

*rolls eyes* Ha? Who'll the laugh be on after the elections? Certainly not the students who realize that at least one of the candidates has substance... For the dense, its JWR2!

Intentionally getting fined to truly demonstrate first-hand your fiscal responsibility-ness, eh?

Interesting strategy, JWR2D2. Let's see if it works out for you.

Misspelling words to truly represent your grasp of the English language... Well done anonymous!

Not everyone has the advantage of being an SFUO insider and being completely aware of the rules... I'm sure it was an honest mistake, and people don't take cheap shots over it!!

What?! Only SFUO insiders have access to the election rules?!?! No way! How unfair! Let's protest!!!

give me a freakin' break!

W-dawg, can you delete the comment referring to "dense" people?

It's not flattering terminology and it is ableist against people with disabilities. It's right up there with "retarded". Then comes "dense". Making fun of people's cognitive faculties is a low blow and it's not that clever of a joke.

perhaps it could be in reference to the amount of thoughts that are in their heads that is preventing them from making such distinctions!

eliz, you're stretching the boundaries of reasonable PC terminology... there is a lot of unflattering terminology... i mean, lets be honest, we all know what 'freakin' means... so lets remove that too while we're at it!

ps. i agree that it was probably an honest mistake and people shouldn't read into it too far... but still, go dean!

anon,

first, pretending that "dense" means a lot of thoughts in the head isn't borrowing on the common language as you used it. You yourself illustrate your grasp of common language in the use of the word, "freakin" as an example. So don't go pretending you didn't mean it like that, because by the origin of the word, you had to mean it like that. You wouldnt have it in your vocabulary if it werent meant to hurt someone who is "different".

Second, I am a former coordinator and current campaigns manager of the Centre for Students with Disabilities. You may not be familiar with what "ableism" is, but feel free to stop by and we can try to help you understand.

Once you understand the rules of "PC-speak", your comment's use of the term "dense" is interchangeable with any offensive term that is intended to be derogatory towards someone who is different.

ie.
"for the homos, its JWR2"
"for the fags,..."
"for all the paki's..."
"for all the retards..."

So it's not a sliding scale of PC-ness. You can't say, okay, racist words are not good for hurting people with, but words that offend allosexuals still are.

It's a realm that you are borrowing on. What's part of that realm? The systemic discrimination and exclusion of certain identities from acceptance.

Why would the word be a word to offend/judge people by? It relies on the historical subjugation of the "dense" by the "smart".

All,

Please note that the best way to reach Wassim is by email and wPhone (not iPhone, wPhone).

Production of La Rotonde just finished and Wassim has gone into hiding. He is slightly embarrassed of the photo that will be printed of him on page 21 of this week's issue.

historical subjugation of the dense? oh lordy! you should write using simpler terms, so as not to subjugate them further...

they're probably too 'insert more pc word for dense' to use the internet... what is the more pc word for people who are not intelligent?

Elizabeth Chelsea said...

if you feel like making a joke about it makes things better, that's what they did when women sought the vote, and blacks sought freedom. They made clever little jokes about it. They who didn't want their advantage to change.

there is no PC word for people who are not intelligent. discrimination on the basis of intelligence is discrimination, you can't dress it up any other way.
